Kaali: A female who is darker in skin-tone. Can also refer to goddess Durga.
In Nepal, there exists a beauty standard that favourises fair skin for women. The expectation can lead to physical and mental suffering for those with darker complexions.
Despite being capable and talented, many women with dark skin feel weak and insecure. They are unable to accept themselves because of their skin color. Some turn to harmful and expensive cosmetics in an attempt to lighten their skin, only to suffer the repercussions. They are yearning to be lighter to fit in.
These women receive various embracing nicknames like ‘Kaali,’ which encompasses both love and contempt. This story also includes my own experiences.
